Carluke is a rural town set in the Clyde valley less than 25 miles by road from Glasgow city centre. Old and New from our Locality. Craignethan Castle, which is situated about 5 miles from Carluke, was built around 1530 by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart and was the last great private stronghold built in Scotland. (Sir James was later executed). Craignethan achieved more recent fame in the early 19th century when it was asserted to be the inspiration for Tillietudlem Castle in Sir Walter Scott’s novel ‘Old Mortality’. Motherwell Heritage Centre presents an interactive history of the area since Roman times, and tells the story of the heyday of the heavy industries, particularly iron and steel, which led to the growth of the industrial towns of Wishaw and Motherwell, which lie immediately to the north of Carluke.
